In 1995, Chicago became home to the world’s largest Starbucks (for a time) when its Rush Street store moved into a 4,000+ square-foot space with comfy chairs and a fireplace. The store would move again in 2012 (this time across the street) to a two-story space to become the first store east of Seattle to adopt the company’s new, more environmentally conscious, store design approach. These Starbucks Reserve stores, under the leadership of the company’s new Siren Retail organization, represent a significant growth opportunity for the company in the U.S. and around the world. The first of these new stores will open in Seattle and Chicago in the second half of FY17, with plans to open 1,000 or more globally over time. In 1971 Starbucks opened in Seattle’s Pike Place Market and began a journey that has taken our coffee around the world. With our Chicago Roastery, opened in November 2019 on the city's Magnificent Mile, we continue to expand the boundaries of our craft with the world's largest Starbucks.

The new growth plan is driven by a strong quarter, the results of which the company released on Thursday. Even though CEO Howard Schultz is stepping down, Starbucks is hardly hitting the brakes—instead, the firm is aggressively pushing to open more stores than ever. Starbucks announced plans to open 12,000 new locations through 2021, increasing its store count to 37,000, USA Today reports.
